Lonsdale Services independent financial advisers Simon Hawker and Steve Cook, members of the Lonsdale Services St Albans financial planning team will paddle 125 miles and navigate 77 portages in 24 hours on Easter weekend. They are taking part in the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race. The race has been held annually over the Easter Weekend since 1948.
Steve and Simon will be raising funds for The Alzheimer’s Society and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust. You can sponsor them here through our Lonsdale Services corporate fundraising portal at, MyDonate BT.
Steve and Simon have been training since the spring to get fit for the double canoe race. According to the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race website the race is ‘a severe test of skill, physical and mental stamina and planning which produces a memorable sense of achievement for those successfully completing it.’
The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race is 125 miles long and has 77 portages. The first 52 miles are along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading, the next 55 miles are on the River Thames to Teddington. The final 17 mile section is on the tidal portion of the Thames.
‘The race starts on the 31st March and we are hoping to complete the race in around twenty four hours, with our support team on hand to encourage us on. Simon and I have been training regularly on the Grand Union Canal. I have also been going to the gym twice a week and changed my diet to build up energy reserves so I can manage our training regime! It is great to be attempting such a historic challenge, and hopefully we can raise lots of money for The Alzheimer’s Society and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust in the process.’
